Chapter 10 — The Mirror I Am for Others: Presence as Service

How do you support someone without turning their process into a measure of your own worth? Before every in-person session in Sant Cugat, Sergi walks toward Parc Central and says a short prayer. He asks for help in guiding the person he is about to meet and reminds himself that he does not own whatever unfolds between them. He didn't always work from that place. For a time, he began to feel that the outcome of every session rested on his shoulders. Professional responsibility—preparing thoroughly, listening intently, continually learning—became tangled with a harder-to-admit urge: the need to prove he was worth what he charged. If the client reached a clear breakthrough, he felt he had done his job well. If he didn't see an immediate shift, he turned the other person's process into a scorecard for his own self-worth. Until one day, he opened up to his mother about it. "Well, leave it in God's hands." That simple phrase reminded him of the difference between doing his part and trying to control what was never his to govern. This chapter explores the craft of accompanying others: knowing when to ask a question and when to offer guidance; holding a silence without rushing to fill it just to feel useful; and preparing for a session with the awareness that a working hypothesis is not a diagnosis, and a map is not a life. It also touches on faith—understood not as authority over someone else, but as a way of surrendering the presumption of knowing better than they do what they need. The person being guided does not have to share that faith. Every encounter begins strictly within their lived experience, their own words, and what they can recognize as true in their own life.
