But what happens when there’s fear, financial dependence, children, isolation, threats, or the lingering hope that things might change? In the third episode of the series: 👻 “Monsters That Don’t Look Like Monsters” Jessica Lomelin talks about one of the questions people experiencing domestic violence hear most often: “Why doesn’t she just leave?” We talk about the invisible threads that can keep someone in an abusive relationship, how difficult it can be to walk away from someone you love, and how fear, manipulation, and control can make finding a way out far more complicated than it seems. But we also talk about the people watching from the outside. The questions we ask. The assumptions we make. And how, sometimes, our words can end up blaming the person experiencing the violence instead of questioning the person causing it. 💭 Because it’s easy to wonder why someone doesn’t leave when we’re not the ones trapped in that web. But what if, instead of asking why they don’t leave, we started asking what’s keeping them from finding a way out? What if we stopped measuring violence by how long someone stays in a relationship and started looking at everything that person is trying to navigate? 🕸️ Because we can’t always see every thread from the outside.
