On Thursday, an ICE agent shot and wounded Oscar Belgal, a twenty-eight-year-old Dominican man, in Manhattan, New York, while he sat in a vehicle with his five-year-old child. Witnesses reported that federal agents were wearing construction vests and masks, making it difficult to identify them as law enforcement, and encircled the vehicle. The Department of Homeland Security said officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation and that Belgal, who had prior convictions and alleged gang ties, drove toward officers, prompting self-defense fire. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch gave a differing account, saying plainclothes officers approached with guns drawn and fired seven rounds as the man pulled forward. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the shooting "unconscionable" and said that he personally called President Trump to demand an end to ICE operations in the city, ending his statement with the call to abolish ICE. Belgal was wounded in his neck and is in the hospital. Protests in New York City have been ongoing since the shooting.
